Woman charged with murder of 75-year-old man in Longton

Detectives investigating the death of a pensioner in Longton more than seven months ago have now charged a woman with murder.

Emergency services were called to reports of a serious assault at an address in Cedar Grove in the early hours of March 6.

Raymond Conlan, 75, was found inside the property with serious injuries to his head and body, police said.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene but later died.

A Home Office post mortem confirmed he died as a result of stab injuries.

A woman was arrested on suspicion of murder and later detained under the Mental Health Act.

Elizabeth Birtwistle, 32, of no fixed address, has now been charged with murder.

She appeared at Preston Magistrates’ Court yesterday (October 22).

Lancashire Constabulary said she is due to make a further appearance at Preston Crown Court today (October 23).
