Carlisle City Council and their partners deliver high quality sport and physical activity programmes throughout the Carlisle district. There have superb leisure facilities in and around Carlisle providing activities for everyone at various levels of ability. Whether you join in for fun or you want to develop your skills further in a particular sport, Carlisle activity centers can help. If you prefer the great outdoors, our walking programmes take place on various routes including parkland and woodland across Carlisle’s urban and rural district.

The leisure facilities at The Sands Centre, The Pools, Stony Holme Golf Course, Bitts Park Tennis and Recreation Area and the Sheepmount Athletics Stadium are managed by GLL, who work closely with us in providing high quality leisure services. GLL is a non profit distributing organisation with charitable 'Trust' status which also operates a number of facilities in Carlisle which include The Sands Centre, 'The Pools', Stony Holme golf course and Sheepmount athletics stadium. Under the terms of the agreement with the Council, GLL is responsible for the management, operation and development of the leisure facilities.

One immediate benefit from the arrangement is the introduction of new membership initiatives which will allow customers to use Cockermouth Leisure Centre, Keswick Leisure Pool, Workington Leisure Centre & Pools as well as the facilities in Carlisle.
