Martin Lewis gives students in university halls tips to claim rent refunds

Martin Lewis has given students living in residential halls at university some top tips for how to potentially claim rent back.

The Money Saving Expert founder was speaking on the first Martin Lewis Money Show Live of the new lockdown, and had plenty of advice for people on claiming financial help and gaining support during the pandemic.

The up-to-the minute financial news for viewers to find out what they may be entitled to including tips on furlough changes and what that could mean for you as well as Martin’s guide to avoiding a price hike on streaming services like Netflix.

For students who are physically unable to live in university halls due to lockdown rules, he had some guidance.

On Money Saving Expert, it explains: “Students have no more right to a rent reduction or payment freeze than any other renter – and this applies to those renting both university-provided accommodation and private housing.

“But some universities have confirmed they will provide rent refunds or discounts, and as they have a pastoral duty of care you may find they’re more likely to offer help than private landlords.”

So what do you do?

If you live in university accommodation, the advice is:

  • Check if your university has a refunds policy in place
  • Check your tenancy agreement
  • Check your tenancy agreement

If you’re a private renter:

  • Speak to your accommodation provider or landlord
  • Check your tenancy agreement
