Joakim Maehle is poised to join Italian side Atalanta from Genk in a £10million deal.
The right back was a target of Burnley’s in the summer although the Clarets didn’t go as far as making an offer for the Danish international.
And Maehle, who has European experience, is now set to join Atalanta, who are into the last 16 of the Champions League and flying high in Serie A.
The 23-year-old, who was also heavily linked to Burnley’s Premier League rivals Southampton, will complete his move in the coming days, according to Sky Sports.
Right back has long been a position the Clarets are looking to add in with Phil Bardsley and Matt Lowton both in the final months of their contract.
Mahele, speaking in the summer, said: “I want to achieve the best with Genk, but at the same time, I am a young ambitious football player who wants to reach the top.
“If a nice club from a top competition knocks on the door, there will be an itch to take that step.
“But KRC Genk said no and I have to accept that as a professional.
“I have already seen – I am not going to mention names – when a player starts rebelling, but that’s not in my character, because I don’t want my behaviour to harm my teammates.
“That’s why I tried to turn the page as quickly as possible.
“I have no guarantee whatsoever there will be such a great offer again. However, that chance is greatest if I reach my best level. That’s why it makes no sense to mourn.”
