Aldi, Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and major supermarket opening hours for May Bank Holiday

After Easter in April, the next big thing everyone looks forward to are the two Bank Holidays in May.

With a bit of luck, the weather will be warm between today and May 3 so everyone can really enjoy whatever they have planned under current restrictions.

Most pubs and restaurants will be busy as expected, but without fail, supermarkets will welcoming more people as opening and closing times tend to change.

Here are the general guides for each supermarket but each store can vary slightly and it is worth double-checking local stores.

Tesco

Opening hours vary between branches so if you are planning on visiting a shop, it’s worth checking the Tesco online store finder first to see opening hours at your local branch.

When we checked most stores were opening at 8am and closing at 6pm or 8pm.

  • Saturday May 1 – 6am – 12am (times will vary between Extra, Express and standard stores
  • Sunday May 2 – 10am – 4pm
  • Monday May 3 – 8am – 8pm

Lidl

During the Bank Holiday, Lidl has confirmed the majority of stores across England and Wales will be open from 8am – 8pm.

  • Saturday May 1 – 8am – 9pm
  • Sunday May 2 – 10am – 4pm
  • Monday May 3 – 8am – 8pm

Aldi

Aldi said: “Planning a great Bank Holiday weekend? Don’t worry, your local Aldi will be open to help you make sure you’ve got everything you need.

“Our UK opening times are below, Scotland opening hours may vary.”

  • Saturday May 1 – 8am – 10pm
  • Sunday May 2 – 10am – 4pm
  • Monday May 3 – 8am – 8pm

Asda

Asda stores will generally be opening from 8am to 8pm on Bank Holiday Monday.

Hours will be different for the Saturday and Sunday, so it’s worth checking the store locator for your local.

NHS and care workers get priority shopping in larger stores every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8am to 9am, as well as Sundays 9am to 10am for browsing.

  • Sunday May 2 – 10am -4pm
  • Monday May 3 – 8am – 8pm

Morrisons

Most branches are open from 7am on Bank Holiday Monday.

Morrisons has introduced an NHS hour from 6am-7am Monday-Saturday.

On Sundays, the majority of stores open at 9am for NHS staff, then at 9.30am for all other customers to shop normally.

For any other stores that open later than 9.30am, they will open an hour earlier for NHS staff.

  • Saturday May 1 – 7am – 10pm
  • Sunday May 2 – 10am – 4pm
  • Monday May 3 – 7am – 8pm

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s stores will be open as usual on Saturday and Sunday but on Monday most larger stores will be open from 8am until 5.30pm depending on size.

Waitrose

  • Saturday May 1 – 8am – 9pm
